ABOUT BATS OF BOONE
When the lights go out and the streets grow quiet, Boone comes alive in a whole new way. Join a charming group of bats as they soar through some of the town’s most beloved landmarks, discover local history, and remind young readers that adventure can be found right in their own backyard.
Written in playful rhyme and brought to life with original illustrations, Bats of Boone celebrates curiosity, community, and the magic of exploring together.
From iconic downtown destinations to hidden local treasures, every page encourages children to slow down, look closer, and make lasting memories with the people they love.
Perfect for families, visitors, classrooms, and anyone who loves the High Country, this keepsake is more than just a bedtime story—it’s an invitation to experience Boone in a whole new way.
ABOUT ALYSSA HUGHES
Alyssa Hughes is owner of Barefoot Baby and director of the Barefoot Baby Foundation.
After she and her husband moved to North Carolina from Connecticut, they started living a life they didn’t know they needed—one filled with hiking, gardening, and adventure. After starting a homestead in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and having their first child, they became even more enthralled with the beauty of the world and the benefits of having their family in it.
This passion started to show itself through the designing of their clothing brand, Barefoot Baby, which had a mission to “bring nature and family back to childhood.”
As their family and connections to the community grew, the idea of starting a non-profit began. They moved forward and have been expanding their ties to both the nature and people around them ever since. Their 501c3 had the same mission of bringing nature and family back to childhood, but it added one part—through memories.
Alyssa’s books reflect the values of both their company and their foundation. From learning about self-esteem through the chickens of Just Red, being brave through The Spooky Barn Owl, or the hope and strength in being Mountain Made, there is no shortage of positive lessons and original artwork to be found. She is part of a family on a mission to bring you through their world of love of each other, of the simple life, and of the beautiful place they call home.
